Counterfeit Christians

Counterfeit Christians

Each Sunday my family and I wake up, eat some breakfast, and set sail to Sunday service.  We attend a fairly large church which usually serves a few thousand every weekend.  After we arrive at church and check the kids into their respective youth programs, my lovely wife and I make our way to the main church hall to grab a seat.  As the hall begins to fill with the church body, I wonder to myself, “Are all these people authentic Christians?”.  By authentic I mean:

  1. Do they or are they trying to live God’s will for their lives or are they chasing after their own dreams?
  2. Do they put others ahead of themselves, effectively choosing to become servants to others?
  3. Do they give to God what is His first, and then live off of the rest . . . or do they satisfy themselves first and give God the scraps? (Time, Money, etc)
  4. Do they live their lives as the Bible commands us to or just an Americanized version of it?

I would like to discuss #4  a little more in-depth.  It seems the American culture has warped Christianity into viewing the commands in the Bible as optional  as long as it doesn’t interfere with their lives.  Somehow we counterfeit christians think that the Peace and Satisfaction that comes from living God’s Will means that we should be living a comfortable life with no risks.  Counterfeit christians have no problem attending church every Sunday and hearing a “Feel Good” sermon that leaves a smile on their faces as they drive off into their picture perfect lives.  As long as God doesn’t interfere with their lives, they are more than happy to “serve” HimThey are happy to give to the church as long as it doesn’t affect their lifestyle.  They compare themselves to other counterfeit christians and say to themselves, “Well, at least I give more than him” or “She doesn’t even go to Bible Study”.  It’s funny that when counterfeit christians play the comparison game, they never compare themselves to authentic Christians.  They never compare themselves to the Christian Martyrs that die every 5 minutes for their faith, to the Pastor in Iran that will be executed unless he abandon’s Christ, or the family that gave up their cozy lives to help orphans.  Comparing themselves to these “crazy” authentic Christians would be very uncomfortable for counterfeit christians.  It might make them stop and question their unhampered lives where they can be Christians, but not strive to be like Christ. They still think their lives are about them, but the truth is it is not about them, it is about HIM. When the counterfeit finally realizes this, he begins his journey back to the mint where he can be made authentic, 100% real.

Here are a few examples as to what the Bible has to say about counterfeit christians:

Isaiah 29:13

The Lord says, “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me.  Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.”

Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

Revelation 3:15-16

“‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth”

I pray for the counterfeit christians, myself included, that we may self reflect and realize what pieces off our faith our still counterfeit so that we may return them to God’s mint to be made authentic.

  1. bro, don't be so hard on them. you don't know where they came from or what level of the spiritual "rung" they are on! God will bring them along according to HIS plan. Lets just pray for all of us

    • We are all on different rungs and I apologize if this post came off as condemning as it was not supposed to be. This was just an observation and general thoughts that I had go through my head. This website is meant to be a window where others can look into my personal walk with Christ and where I can share my raw interpretation of God's commands. In America, it seems that most of us believe in a water downed version of Christianity. Let's not kid ourselves, the gate is narrow . . . let's live with a sense of urgency.

I personally regard pieces of myself to be counterfeit and need work. Self reflect, identify the problem, fix the problem.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts as I am always looking for feedback . . . which is another reason this site was created.

      • Ezekiel 33:7-9

"Son of Man (Faithful, responsive servant of God, Ezekiel in this case), I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel: so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked 'o wicked man, you will surely die', and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold YOU accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself."

The verses you quoted in this post are God's Truth from His Word. They are just as legitimate and necessary to share as any other verse. God wants us to hear, honor and reflect on ALL of His Word. We are all watchmen and we are CALLED to look out for each other. Sometimes that means boldly and lovingly sharing parts of the Bible that have been for so long swept under the rug for the sake of our own spiritual comfort. I guarantee that if there is only ever one person in each of our lives that takes to heart what we have shared about God's Truth and they turn and believe as a result, that one person will be eternally (literally) grateful that we not only risked offending them but that we didn't retreat to the watered down version after facing push back time and again. Only His Word has the power to save, not (insert name here) human, selective and flawed version of it. Let us all pray for the Lord to give us courage, balance and a broken heart, in sharing the Truth of His Grace AND His Judgement, so that the power of His Word will be released through us.

I would recommend reading all of Ezekiel Chapter 33:1-20. God's Justice and Grace in perfect balnce.

    • So what do you believe?

    • tcb121,

I think we have so much to talk about! I don't think this is the correct platform to discuss this subject in the depth needed. You can reach me via the contact form located here:

I can provide you with my phone number so you can call me and we can chat! Talk to you soon!

    Hi MCJ,

I relate to your thoughts completely and understand your frustration with the wishy washy Christianity that is also preached in our church buildings here in the UK. This is in fact the point of it all. Your fellow believers have been spoon fed this weak idea of what Christianity is and WE must make the effort to show them the abundant life that our awsome father has already put in place for us, through the death and resurection of our Lord Jesus. I can only say that in my experience, the best route for this is to live the life, shown clearly in the Word and be the disiple that the others cannot help but look towards as being different. Then when they are drawn to you, give them the Word and show them that it is this is the only way to know Jesus and the plans that God has “Plans to prosper and not harm us”. My own testimony was dramatically changed once I started to watch The Gospel Truth, with Andrew Wommack. We had been Christians 8 years and were sick and poor but through Andrew showing us the way to discover the truth, by reading the word!, myself and my family received the blessings promised of God and have been healed from serious illnesses and have moved on in our walk with God to a point where we recognise the same issues you do within your church but we have had the wonderful opportunity to speak, one to one, with fellow Christians who are hungry for the more that God has already provided but they have been going to the saved but stuck churches, along with everyone else.
It is the leadership that is ultimately responsible for showing that Jesus is the only way the truth and the life and not this politically correct, poor excuse for Christianity that they promote. You are fortunate to have the opportunity to check out Andrew Wommack ministries in the USA, I can only suggest that you take a look yourself (awmi.net), see that it is all good, live the life God intended for you from the begining and then you show other people in your congregation his materials.
Just by setting up this site, you have shown you are a man on His mission and that is fantastic. The Lord has blessed you my brother and there is so much more to come, in the great name of Jesus!
    Kind regards
