I Tell You the Truth | John 3:3

I Tell You the Truth | John 3:3

When reading the bible I noticed Jesus said the phrase “I tell you the truth . . .” numerous times during His ministry.  I don’t know about you, but when I hear the son of God say, “I tell you the truth . . .”,  I figure it is a good time to listen and try to understand what He is referring to.  Today I will analyzing John 3:3 and John 3:5.

3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” 4 “How can a man be born when he is old?”  Nicodemus asked.  “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”  5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.  6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.  7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases.  You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going, So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

I have to admit, up until about a year ago I really didn’t get what it meant to be “born again.”  Twelve or so months ago I asked Jesus to let me feel what pains Him so it could also pain me.  What I first felt was all the pain that I personally caused Him by the way I was living, talking, and treating others.  It was then I realized I had to die.  I personally, as in the person I was, had to die so that I could be reborn.  Since my rebirth of “water and the Spirit” Jesus has slowing been revealing to me how deep the rabbit hole really goes.  You see, Jesus doesn’t want to just perform a touch up on us, he wants to totally renovate us from the inside out.  At first I thought I could give 10%, maybe 20% of myself to Him and that would suffice.   What I have found is that He doesn’t want a piece of us, He wants all of us, as in 100% of us and nothing less.  Things in our lives rob God from His glory and the attention we should be giving to Him.  In my life things as silly as fantasy football, work, and the dollar compete with God for my attention.  In effect, my relationship with God is traded for bragging rights on a virtual football field or a bonus at the end of the year . . . what am I thinking!?!  When I look at it this way it shows me that I have a long way yet to go but day by day I truly feel a piece of myself die.  I hope that someday there will be nothing left to give of me and that what you see before you is 100% of Him.

  1. Colossians 3:1-10

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

  2. What a hard and painful experience this can be. Taking you to that mirror that God sees you in. Wow! Sometimes it's not what we want to see. But making the changes and coming through the other side is so worth the fight. We can be transformed into new selves. Once you are there, the things that you thought you couldn't live without or things that were so important just don't matter anymore. What a freeing feeling. I challenge each one of us to go before God's mirror and take a look at what he sees. And remember he loves us no matter what he sees!!
